Understanding Catastrophic Health Insurance

These days, there are a lot of people struggling to pay the bills. Times are tough and money is tight all over it seems. You may be in need of health coverage for yourself and/or your family, but do not receive it from your employer and don't think you can afford an individual policy. In this case, consider catastrophic health insurance as a possible choice. Many insurance shoppers don't realize this is an option for them.

With catastrophic insurance, the basic premise is that you are going to pay more for routine exams and prescriptions, but if something serious happens you are covered against sky high costs. This might include a car accident, heart attack, stroke, or any other sudden catastrophic event for which treatment is medically sophisticated and highly expensive. For healthy adults who don't need regular medications or doctor visits this is a type of insurance to think about if you want to save money as the plans are significantly cheaper on average than the traditional insurance policy.

If you haven't gone to the doctor in years and never get sick, by all means consider catastrophic coverage. However if you are the kind of person who catches every cold and virus and takes prescription medicine regularly catastrophic coverage may not be enough for you. It really depends on your health status and personal preferences as to whether or not this coverage is right for you.

Under the umbrella of catastrophic insurance there are two main categories – comprehensive and supplemental. With comprehensive coverage, the deductible is still high but you get more along the lines of traditional health insurance. Supplemental catastrophic coverage is what it sounds like, a supplement to any other health insurance policies you might have.

You might wonder whether or not this type of medical insurance coverage is right for you. First of all, evaluate your situation. Catastrophic health insurance is often preferred by the self employed because it is the least expensive choice. For healthy individuals this kind of insurance plan can save money which is a good thing in today's day and age. If you have questions or want to get quoted for this type of insurance coverage speak to an agent or submit an online insurance quote form.
